I had exactly the same situation. In my case the MultiLoad Indicator started without "--trayicon" option.
In XFC4 Settings -> Sessions and Startup -> System Load Indicator --> Application Autostart tab -> Edit window I fixed the Command field to "indicator-multiload --trayicon".
