As long as the SRU team is fine with it and it passes testing, I'm happy with it. I'm a bit concerned that the case where GRUB exits 0 but outputs nothing is now conflated with the case where GRUB exits non- zero, but like you said there are instances where we don't want to just bail out of the script. In a perfect world, I'd have juliank review this since he's the ultimate bootloader wizard in Ubuntu (and Debian too I believe), so maybe if you can talk him into taking a quick look at it that would be good.
