sorry, i thought i'd posted this info, as it might help another user, i spoke to dell about this and they believed it to be a hardware problem, sent me a knew dvd drive, i downloaded the codecs, was then directed to by totem to download the necessary plugins to support the application front and back ends and now it works thanks sandra
