As said, implementing the detaching operation isn't trivial.

Changing the menu labels to something that explains that detaching isn't
possible could be done more easily.

I suggest that you use the following workaround:
Right click the message, and select forward inline.
When composing the forward message, remove the attachment(s) and set yourself 
as the recipient.
Afterwards, delete the original email.

This would allow you to keep a partial copy of the contents that you are
able to keep. You could also modify the subject line as desired, and add
a descriptive text to the message, to explain how the message was
modified.
