So the walc snap is using gnome-3-28-1804 content snap, which provides
Freetype 2.8.1.
Looking at the Freetype website, they specifically call out fixes for
OpenType variation fonts in Freetype 2.9 ("If you are going to use
variation fonts, please update to this version since it comes with some
important fixes"), and 2.10.1 ("fixing bytecode hinting of OpenType
variation fonts").
I can reproduce font rendering issues in the dialog shown when closing
the snap's main window on Ubuntu where it is also using the
"Ubuntu[wdth,wght].ttf" variable font. At the moment, I'm checking to
see if injecting different versions of freetype makes a difference.
