Hello John, Thank you for your patience. I can now report that the problem was not a bug after all. I had already noticed some problems on the disk where an Ubuntu instance was installed. The next day that instance crashed. I checked and repaired the disk - 4 errors were found.
After the repair, l reinstalled Ubuntu, and sound functioned perfectly immediately after startup.
