Ok, with linux mint in a vm, and using xed to edit the same file twice,
I reproduced it against an ubuntu plucky samba server. Fascinating.

kernel 6.8.0-51-generic
cifs-utils 2:7.0-2ubuntu0.2
samba 2:4.19.5+dfsg-4ubuntu9
xed 3.8.2+xia

That's the same xed version I tried in ubuntu, self built. I wonder if
+xia indicates some patch that is not in upstream. But anyway, we have
another reproducer now.
