Thanks for the investigation. By looking at 74851f66811854c and its
commit message it is not obvious to me that it's a segfault-fixing
patch, however that is what Myles' analysis show.

By looking at the upstream changelog [0] I think we could potentially
fix this by doing a microrelease upload, but unfortunately the package
does not have autopkgtests, which is a requirement for microrelease SRUs
[1]. Adding some autopkgtests _may_ still be easier than backporting a
targeted fix for this bug. This would allow proceeding with the
microrelease upload. Seek for SRU team pre-approval before proceeding.
