I have this bug too. Lenovo T61, gutsy, ipw3945 here, connected to a 802.11bg access point (Linksys WRT54GL running openwrt), no encryption. Normal throughput is over 1 megabyte per second (measured with the netspeed applet), signal/noise ratio is over +50 dB (according to wavemon). When I transfer a large file over the network, after several minutes the transfer speed drops to 100 kilobytes per second, s/n-r drops to +0/+1 dB. Asking network-manager to reconnect to the same WLAN fixes things temporarily (but some connections get dropped). The iwpriv workaround I discovered here fixes things too.
