I am having somewhat similar problems with my wireless. I have an Lenovo X61 with a 3945 card. At home, I have two different wireless routers, both running 128-bit WEP encryption. I associate with one of them, but I almost never manager to get a DHCP address. When I do get a connection, it is extremely slow because of a large number of dropped or mangled packets. I can't seem to connect to the other router (not sure what that problem is). My wife's computers (two, running windows) generally have no problems.
