At last this seems to be resolved. I have had no further issues since upgrading to 2.6.24-2-generic before Christmas (tested for about 6 or 7 days straight). Lets hope it stays this way for me and the others affected!
For anyone else with this issue, upgrading to the hardy kernel ( >= 2.6.24-2-generic) should do the trick!
