** Description changed: Hello, I am involved in a lengthy process of dist-upgrades and noticed a strange pattern. Within 1000 hosts, I encountered about 20 with a single core processor setup (mostly virtualized systems). When upgrading from 22.04 to 24.04 the systems get stuck at the same spot, full kernel panic, 100% cpu load, no more network responses. dpkg: warning: unable to delete old directory '/lib/systemd/system/initrd-root-device.target.wants': Directory not empty dpkg: warning: unable to delete old directory '/lib/systemd/system/graphical.target.wants': Directory not empty dpkg: warning: unable to delete old directory '/lib/systemd/system/getty.target.wants': Directory not empty Preparing to unpack .../udev_255.4-1ubuntu8.10_amd64.deb ... Unpacking udev (255.4-1ubuntu8.10) over (249.11-0ubuntu3.16) ... Timeout, server myserver not responding. That is the last message. After killing the machine and restarting it, sometimes the bootloader is broken, sometimes the package manager is havily corrupted and looping so that dpkg --configure -a is not cleanly possible anymore. I would like to provide further informations but cannot do full unsanitized debug dumps of the machines involved (unfortunately). I - havent found that bug with the single core constellation anywhere. My - quick solution for now is to add a second core, possibly removing it - afterwards. + havent found that bug with the dual (or more) core constellation + anywhere.
