cd ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/
rm -rf extensions
sudo apt remove gnome-shell-extensions
and then log in again.

All of the above instructions were done as requested prior to producing
the journal files for version 2.

Note that there is no way for the user to know when the machine started
hanging.

I can only note the time that an access attempt failed.  Then hold the
power button for 10 seconds.  Then boot up where you are taken usually
into Grub.  Then select the boot option of your choice.  Ubuntu.
