OK, thanks. Please remove them manually, at least:

  apps-menu
  places-menu
  launch-new-instance
  window-list

and then log in again.

gnome-shell itself seems to still be running before the reboot so it
does still seem like a soft freeze of some sort.

If you are using a USB hub of any type then please try removing that.
