Oh, I have an answer for my own questions.
gdm 46.2-1ubuntu1~24.04.3 introduces 5 retries with Wayland before falling back
to Xorg. This seems broken with auto-login: it keeps retrying forever rather
than falling back to Xorg.
Your system has always been affected by
> Failed to start X Wayland: Directory "/tmp/.X11-unix" is not writable
> [email protected]: Main process exited, code=dumped,
> status=5/TRAP
except before 46.2-1ubuntu1~24.04.3 it could fall back to Xorg, while
now it fails to do so.
