Public bug reported:

Trying to upgrade from Kubuntu 25.04 to Kubuntu 25.10, arriving at upgrading
grub (using the console in KDE to run do-release-upgrade).
I got a message if I want to keep the locally installed version or the new
version a file related to grub (don't remember which).
I chose the option to compare the files, and then nothing happened. Normally I
should get a screen showing the differences, but this didn't happen.
There was no way to recover from this error.
I had to kill do-release-upgrade.
I ran dpkg --configure -a to recover, but this one got stuck on
update-initramfs, which was unrecoverable and unfixable no matter what I did
(apt install -f) etc.
After reboot, the system would not boot anymore, with a kernel panic showing
that init is missing.
I had to reinstall the system from scratch, so log files are not available.
