No that cannot be it since I've been on Wayland ever since. Xorg did not work for me - Caused many issues which switching to Wayland resolved. Again, I cannot explain any further - It's outside my expertise. I know that updating to the version of gdm3 that is the focus here caused automatic login to break after it has been working for a very long time > 1 year.
