Sorry I failed to put two and two together. It seems there was a
regression in bug 2129777. So the fallback (to Xorg or to software
rendering?) was saving you until the most recent gdm3 update. But more
generally the fallback shouldn't be required and in your case the real
fix is to remove the environment variable.
