I recently had this happening a lot, so I disabled all my extensions and
have been enabling them one-by-one. I currently have the "ddterm" and
"Hibernate Status Button" user extensions enabled, but enabling these
didn't immediately trigger the issue.

This week, I have noticed it happening a few times a day, and it's
always been triggered by clicking a link in a Thunderbird email that
opens in Firefox. The caret remains wherever I was last typing (which
may be a third application), and the only reliable way I've found to
sort it out is to press the Super key to activate "Present windows",
then I can type as normal again.
