I have just spoken to my colleague, and he has also been experiencing
this consistently during the last two weeks, but not before. It is
always when he clicks a link in another app that opens in Firefox.

It sounds a lot like this issue reported on the Sway project:

fix in GNOME: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gtk/-/merge_requests/5293
However, we are both running on X11, not Wayland.
