This seems to have been solved for me by going to Software & Updates -> Additional Drivers, selecting a different driver for my NVIDIA card, closing the window, re-opening the window and re-selecting NVIDIA driver (open kernel) metapackage from nvidia-driver-580-open (proprietary, tested)...
