Source package:
gnome-control-center (Settings → Keyboard → Add Input Source → Other →
user-defined layout)
Ubuntu release (lsb_release -rd):
Description: Ubuntu 25.10
Release: 25.10
Package version (apt-cache policy gnome-control-center):
Installed: 1:49.0-1ubuntu2
Candidate: 1:49.0-1ubuntu2
----
Description of the issue:
Selecting a user-defined custom keyboard layout in Settings -> Keyboard
triggers an immediate system shutdown. Subsequent boot results in an
"Authentication Error" loop followed by a total UI freeze, locking the
user out.
What I expected to happen:
- Settings should add the selected custom keyboard layout and return to the
Keyboard list without crashing or shutting down the machine.
- After reboot, the login screen should allow me to enter my password normally
and retry if authentication fails.
What happened instead:
- When selecting the user-defined custom keyboard layout, the whole system
immediately crashes and powers off.
- After reboot, entering the correct password shows "Authentication Error"
once, then the login screen freezes completely (cannot retry or go back).
----
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Settings -> Keyboard.
2. Click "Add Input Source".
3. Click the three dots -> select "Other".
4. Select a user-defined custom keyboard layout. -> System immediately crashes
and powers off.
5. Turn the computer back on.
6. At the login screen, enter the correct user password.
----
Results:
At Step 5: The computer shuts down instantly (hard crash).
At Step 7: The system displays "Authentication Error", and immediately
after this message, the login screen freezes completely (unable to retry
password or go back).
Severity: Critical (System crash + User lockout).
----
Workaround:
Boot to Recovery Mode (Root Shell) and run:
su - your_username -c "dbus-run-session gsettings reset
org.gnome.desktop.input-sources sources"
