Summary:
Severe UI lag when uploading images or using clipboard in web apps (ChatGPT) on
Ubuntu GNOME Wayland.
Environment:
- Ubuntu 24.04
- GNOME (Wayland session)
- Intel + NVIDIA hybrid graphics
- Firefox (Snap) and Chrome both affected
- NVIDIA drivers installed and functional
Description:
When using web applications that rely heavily on image uploads and dynamic DOM
updates (specifically ChatGPT),
the system experiences multi-second UI freezes during file selection, image
upload, or clipboard handling.
The issue reproduces consistently:
- Across browsers (Firefox and Chrome)
- With GNOME animations enabled or disabled
- With browser hardware acceleration enabled or disabled
- With Intel or NVIDIA rendering
- On Wayland
Switching to X11 changes behavior but does not resolve the issue
reliably.
The rest of the system remains responsive during the lag.
This appears to be a Wayland + GNOME Shell + GTK file picker / sandbox
interaction issue rather than a GPU or driver problem.
Expected Result:
No UI freeze during browser file uploads.
Actual Result:
Noticeable UI freezes (several seconds) during image upload or clipboard
operations.
