I see that "apt-get remove snapd firefox" was not enough, but "apt autoremove --purge snapd" works. So, now this system is snap-free and firefox is the Mozilla version, and all is well. The above bug report is now reduced to the report of "update.go:85: cannot change mount namespace" messages.
