**System Configuration:**

- Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
- Mutter: 46.2-1ubuntu0.24.04.13 (buggy)
- GNOME Shell: 46.0-0ubuntu6~24.04.12
- Hardware: 30GB RAM, 32GB swap, single physical display
- Session: Wayland

**Timeline:**

- **December 13, 2025 @ 19:56**: Upgraded mutter .12 → .13
- **Same day**: System instability began
- **Ongoing**: OOM killer every 2-3 hours until downgrade

**Symptoms matching this bug:**

1. **Continuous KMS thread failures** (every 6-7 seconds):

   ```
   Failed to make thread 'KMS thread'
   meta_output_get_monitor: runtime check failed: (priv->monitor)
   ```
1. **Shared memory explosion**:

- Normal: 60 MB
- During leak: **12 GB** (200x increase)
- Leak rate: ~340 MB/minute

1. **Complete system exhaustion**:

- RAM: 99.7% used (29.7GB/29.8GB)
- Swap: 100% full (32GB/32GB)
- OOM killer invoked, forced logout

**Key Finding:** The leak was invisible in process memory (`top`, `ps`)
making it difficult to diagnose.

**Workaround - Downgrade to .12:**

Downgrading to mutter 46.2-1ubuntu0.24.04.12 **completely resolves** the
issue:

- Swap usage: 32GB → 0GB
- RAM usage: 29GB → 4GB
- Shared memory: 12GB → 144MB
- System stable 24+ hours with no crashes
- KMS thread errors: GONE

Held packages to prevent auto-upgrade

**Impact:** This bug makes Ubuntu 24.04 **completely unusable** on
affected systems. System becomes unresponsive within hours, causing data
loss and inability to work.
