This might be related to bug 1876632. If so then switching users,
switching VTs or resuming from suspend could be triggers.

Certainly driver support for GeForce 9400 is a problem if you want to
run any current release of Ubuntu. So I think the best solution here is
to stick to Xfce because it probably doesn't touch the GPU and won't
trigger the same issues.
