Yes the Nouveau driver is quite buggy and that might never be fixed for
older GPUs.

Perhaps a better way forward for the GeForce 9400 is to use a supported
configuration with the Nvidia-340 driver. That would require installing
Ubuntu 22.04 (the original release, not 22.04.1+) so you have a stable
setup where the driver works and the kernel will always support that
driver. Just make sure it's the original 22.04 release and not 22.04.1
etc.

Alternatively, if you want to venture into unsupported territory then
you could stay on 25.10 using an old enough kernel to support Nvidia-340
(from https://kernel.ubuntu.com/mainline/) and manually install the
Nvidia-340 driver. I'm not sure what other issues that might cause but
it's certainly not supported by Ubuntu.

Another alternative would be to disable the 'nouveau' driver completely
by blacklisting it in one of /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist*.conf -- That
would give you a supported, bug-free, but slow 25.10 experience.
