Still broken in Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS. I tried OP's suggested fix, but
#!/bin/sh -u resulted in undefined parameter issues at
next_check_interval. I also found the script to still run even with tty
-s at the top. I periodically run fsck as part of my backup/imaging
strategy. So, I just added exit at the top of this script. I'm happy
with the shortened ssh connect time and reduced HDD wear and tear.
