Public bug reported:
I updated to the HWE kernel 6.17.0-14-generic on Lubuntu, and the
VirtualBox 7.0.16 DKMS modules failed to build. This prevents VirtualBox
from running and can cause a kernel panic during boot if DKMS fails in
the post-install script.
Steps to reproduce:
Install Lubuntu (any recent 22.04+ HWE release).
Install VirtualBox 7.0.16 from the repository.
Update the kernel to 6.17 HWE (e.g., via apt update && apt full-upgrade).
Reboot.
Observed behavior:
DKMS fails to compile VirtualBox modules
(/var/lib/dkms/virtualbox/.../make.log).
Network and system may fail to initialize correctly if the kernel post-
install script exits with error 11.
GRUB may need manual intervention to boot an older kernel (e.g.,
6.14.0-37) to recover.
Expected behavior:
Either the VirtualBox DKMS module should build successfully on the new
kernel, or the update process should warn the user about potential
incompatibility.
Impact:New users who rely on VirtualBox for running Windows VMs, legacy
software, or pre-built ISO images may end up with a non-booting system.
Most users accept updates blindly and may not realize they need to boot
an older kernel to recover.
Workarounds:
Boot the previous stable kernel (6.14.0-37-generic).
Remove VirtualBox temporarily until a compatible version (7.0.18+) is
released.
Alternatively, use QEMU/KVM instead of VirtualBox to avoid DKMS issues.
Additional notes:
This issue is not a kernel bug, but a DKMS compatibility problem with
VirtualBox.
A warning or advisory in the release notes or update notifications could
prevent serious user frustration.
System info:
Lubuntu version: 22.04 LTS (or whichever you are using)
Kernel: 6.17.0-14-generic
VirtualBox: 7.0.16 from Ubuntu repositories
