Public bug reported:
Page URL: https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/install-ubuntu-on-chromebook
Issue Found:
The tutorial provides installation instructions that reference Unity desktop
environment, which has been discontinued since Ubuntu 17.10 (2017).
Current Content (Step 7 of tutorial):
"Alternative Installation Options... If you want a more lightweight system, you
can install LXDE or XFCE by replacing -t unity with -t lxde or -t xfce."
Problem:
1. Unity is no longer available in Ubuntu repositories as of Ubuntu 18.04 and
later
2. The command `sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-desktop/ubuntu-make`
followed by installation with `-t unity` will fail
3. Ubuntu has used GNOME as the default desktop since 17.10
Expected Behavior:
The tutorial should reference GNOME (the current default desktop) or other
currently supported desktop environments (XFCE, KDE Plasma, LXDE/LXQt).
Suggested Fix:
Replace references to Unity with GNOME, or update the command examples to use
`-t gnome` as the default option.
Why This Matters:
Users following this tutorial on a Chromebook will encounter errors when trying
to install Unity. This is an actively maintained tutorial on ubuntu.com that
new users are likely to follow, and the broken instructions will prevent
successful installation.
Impact:
High - Tutorial will fail for users attempting to follow Unity installation
instructions.
Ubuntu Version:
Affects Ubuntu 18.04 and all later versions (Unity removed from official
repositories)
** Affects: ubuntu-docs (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: New
