Public bug reported:
Technical Report: Kernel Regression & NVIDIA Power State Failure
Subject: Kernel 6.14.0-37 & 6.17.0-14 Regression: Boot Failure (Black
screen/blinking cursor) on Dell Precision 5570
1. Hardware Environment
System: Dell Precision 5570
GPU: NVIDIA RTX (Hybrid Graphics with Intel ADL-P)
OS: Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble Numbat)
Driver: nvidia-driver-580 (Proprietary)
2. Description of the Problem
After updating from the stable Kernel 6.14.0-33-generic, subsequent versions
fail to initialize the graphical environment.
Kernel 6.14.0-37-generic: System hangs at boot with a blinking cursor.
Visual logs show ACPI errors and power state transition failures for the
NVIDIA device.
Kernel 6.17.0-14-generic: Automatic upgrade fails to compile/install
NVIDIA modules via DKMS due to missing headers or incompatible linker
scripts (module.lds not found).
3. Error Logs (Captured via Serial/Screen)
During the boot hang in .37, the following critical errors are observed:
nvidia: Unable to change power state from D3cold to D0
hub 3-2:1.0: hub_ext_port_status failed (err = -71)
ACPI Error: Aborting method \_SB.PC00.PEG1.PG00._ON due to previous
error (AE_NOT_FOUND)
4. Steps to Reproduce
Install Ubuntu 24.04 on a Dell Precision 5570.
Enable NVIDIA proprietary drivers (580).
Update kernel to version 6.14.0-37 or 6.17.0-14.
Reboot. The system will fail to start the X server/Wayland, resulting in
a black screen.
5. Workaround
Reverting to Kernel 6.14.0-33-generic restores full functionality, including
external displays and proper power management.
6. Expected Behavior
Newer kernels should maintain power management compatibility with the Dell
Precision 5570 firmware and ensure DKMS modules are correctly built during the
upgrade process.
