I understand a lot more today after spending several days with ChatGPT, which ran me around in circles. But in the end, I got the 6.8 kernel installed, and grub updated to boot into them. I assume, as you say above, that I tried to get rid of 6.17/4 while it was still running. This looks like a 'bug' with VMware Workstation not updating as fast as Ubuntu has. I can live with that, as VMW is now working fine. I consider this issue resolved on my end. Over to you. Cheers
