Public bug reported:
On a fresh installation of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (Daily Build) with ZFS and native
encryption enabled, the system fails to boot and drops into Emergency Shell. It
appears that dracut fails to initialize the keystore for the ZFS pool,
resulting in a failure to mount /sysroot.
System Information:
Distribution: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS (Resolute Raccoon) Development Branch
Kernel version: 6.19.0-6-generic
Installation Method: Official Daily ISO (February 21, 2026 build),
Gnome/Desktop
Disk Setup: ZFS with encryption enabled
Steps to Reproduce:
Install Ubuntu 26.04 using the Daily Live ISO.
Select "ZFS" as the file system and enable "Encryption".
Complete the installation and reboot.
Expected Behavior:
The system should prompt for the ZFS decryption password during the initramfs
stage and then mount the root file system.
Actual Behavior:
The boot process hangs and displays the following errors:
dracut-pre-mount[1213]: /usr/bin/dracut-pre-mount: 35:
/var/lib/dracut/hooks/pre-mount/90-zfs-load-key-cryptsetup: not found
Error: /dev/mapper/keystore-rpool does not exist.
Warning: ZFS: Key /run/keystore/rpool/system.key for rpool hasn't
appeared. Try waiting.
FAILED: Failed to mount /sysroot.
The system then enters Emergency Mode.
