My main question is: why can the required features not be backported?

'discarded due to fragility" seems prematurely dismissive to me. IME
there's a huge general reluctance to backport, but whenever I've looked
into specifics, I've found the argumentation to be spurious. So if it's
really not feasible I'd like to see a detailed technical explanation and
not a four word dismissal.
