Indeed "sudo apt purge xserver-xorg-video-intel" made "nomodeset" no longer necessary. ----- For the overall picture: I am an Ubuntu user since 2006. Since then I primarily upgraded releases and jumped boxes via cloning. I think the last time I did a fresh install was 2009 when I retired and switched to XFCE. Up to and including 25.10 no "nomodeset" was ever required. May be this might be a topic for the "known problems" in the release notes. ----- Thank you very much. Regards, Dick :)
