Public bug reported:
The internal microphone and/or headset microphone is not detected or
fails to capture any input on a clean installation of Ubuntu 24.04.4
While the output (speakers/headphones) works fine, the input source
remains silent or absent in the Sound Settings despite using
PipeWire/WirePlumber.
Hardware Information:
- OS: Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS
- Audio Server: PipeWire (default)
- Kernel version: 6.17.0-14-generic
- Audio Chipset: Realtek ALC255 (Detected via workaround)
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open "Sound Settings".
2. Check "Input Device".
3. Speak into the internal microphone or plug in a headset.
4. Observe that the input level bar does not move.
Actual Result:
The microphone does not capture any audio input.
Expected Result:
The microphone should be detected and capture audio input automatically without
manual configuration.
Workaround Found:
I have successfully fixed this issue by adding a specific model quirk to the
ALSA configuration. Adding the following line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
resolves the problem:
Bash
options snd-hda-intel model=alc255-acer,dell-headset-multi
After adding this line and rebooting, the microphone works perfectly.
This suggests that the current kernel/ALSA pin mapping for this specific
hardware needs to be updated to include this quirk by default.
