After far too much messing around and red herrings, turns out this is an
upstream mksquashfs-tools bug https://github.com/plougher/squashfs-
tools/issues/339 which is fixed in the latest release. I am going to
test backporting just the commit to fix this branch and upload if it
works in my testing, but we should probably consider syncing 4.7.5-1
from Debian.
