Public bug reported:
Usually once or twice during the workday Xorg has been freezing on me,
consistently generating a log message like the following:

ZINK: vkQueueSubmit failed (VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST)
The cursor continues to update, but the windows will not update.
Sometimes the keyboard continues to register key presses, and I've been
able to pause/unpause my music by pressing the appropriate buttons in
order to navigate to the terminal playing the music and press the space
button (pausing/unpausing the music), suggesting that in this case the
only issue is with the display updating and not the window manager.
Sometimes the music will continue for 15-30 seconds after the freeze
before stopping (not sure if music only stops when the keyboard input
stops). When the keyboard no longer accepts input I have to power cycle
the machine. However, if the keyboard still accepts input then I've
been able to terminate the old session and start a new session via the
following series of steps:
1. Type Ctrl+Alt+F6
2. Login to the tty
3. Terminate the frozen session: sudo loginctl terminate-seat seat0
4. Login via the graphical interface
The hardware I'm running is an "HP ZBook Fury 16 G11 Mobile Workstation
PC" and the GPU is an "RTX 3500 Ada Generation Laptop GPU" running in
"Discrete" (in contrast to "Hybrid") mode. There are two external
monitors attached: the first monitor is attached through an HDMI cable,
while the second monitor is attached via a Dell DisplayLink D6000S which
is connected to the computer via a USB-C cable and connected to the
monitor through an HDMI cable. The display server is X and the window
manager is i3. The Ubuntu OS version is 24.04. I almost always fully
shutdown and start the machine each workday. I do not know how to
reproduce the freeze, though I suspect the freeze happens slightly more
often when interacting with Evolution.
I first observed this issue after transitioning from the G9 model to the
G11 model, though I first dealt with a (possibly unrelated) issue where
the G11 model would often become unresponsive after DPMS powered off the
displays; this was worked around by configuring Xorg so that the
displays remained powered off but the screen lock still activated. I
did have occasional freezes (once every week or two) on the G9 model,
but they seem to be an almost daily occurrence on the G11.
Below is a table of symptoms I've observed from the freeze:
1. Windows responsive
2. Mouse responsive
3. Audio continued
4. Keyboard responsive
