Public bug reported:
Hardware
Wi-Fi: Realtek RTL8852BE PCIe 802.11ax (PCI ID 10ec:b852)
Driver/module: rtw89_8852be (uses rtw89_core, rtw89_pci)
System
Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS (x86_64)
Kernel: 6.17.0-19-generic
Problem
On 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, connection shows severe latency spikes/jitter and occasional
packet loss under load (gaming, speed tests). Sometimes the connection hangs or
briefly disconnects. This is visible as extreme Speedtest jitter and in-game
lag spikes.
How to reproduce
Connect to a 2.4 GHz SSID (example: ZTE_2.4G_...)
Start continuous ping to router:
ping -i 0.2 192.168.1.1
Run a Speedtest or sustained download/upload
Observe ping spikes and occasional packet loss during the load
Observed results
Idle ping to router is low (~1–2 ms).
During Speedtest on 2.4 GHz, ping to router spikes heavily (e.g. max ~200–260
ms) and small packet loss (~0.6%).
Disabling Bluetooth does not eliminate the issue.
Expected results
Stable low-latency ping to router during normal traffic load, no large
spikes/loss.
Workaround / mitigation
Switching to 5 GHz SSID resolves the issue:
While running Speedtest, ping to router stays stable (example: avg ~3 ms, max
~25 ms, 0% loss) and Speedtest jitter becomes low.
iw dev wlp3s0 link confirms 5 GHz (e.g. freq ~5320 MHz).
Applying these rtw89 module options improves stability (persist across reboot):
options rtw89_core disable_ps_mode=y
options rtw89_pci disable_clkreq=y disable_aspm_l1=y disable_aspm_l1ss=y
