summary of the symptoms: with the latest kernels in ubuntu 26.04 and 25.10 the gdm fails to appear (after a first couple of boots) on several different thinkpads (on 4 machines in my case). older kernels work fine. this happens only when an x11 desktop xfce is installed. vanilla ubuntu with only gnome works fine. various journal logs attached above.
