The Intel i915 display driver fails to load silently on kernel 6.17.0-20
and later (also tested 6.17.0-29) on a Dell laptop with Intel CometLake-U
GT2 UHD Graphics (00:02.0). The result is a black screen on boot — GDM
cannot find any display outputs. Kernel 6.17.0-19 works correctly on the
same hardware.
System: Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS
Hardware: Dell laptop, Intel Corporation CometLake-U GT2 UHD Graphics (rev 02)
NVIDIA GeForce MX230 (secondary GPU, Optimus/hybrid graphics)
Symptoms:
- Black screen after boot splash on kernels 6.17.0-20 and 6.17.0-29
- `lsmod | grep i915` returns no output on affected kernels
- `lsmod | grep i915` shows i915 loaded normally on 6.17.0-19
- GDM logs show: "Failed to setup: No GPUs with outputs found"
- Xorg repeatedly crashes trying to find a display device
- nvidia-smi shows GPU detected but Disp.A: Off (display wired to Intel)
Workaround: boot into 6.17.0-19-generic via GRUB advanced options.
Bisect suggestion: regression introduced between 6.17.0-19 and
6.17.0-20.
