@dtl131: If it does not work like that don't release the HWE kernel in the LTS repo. If I have two packages in original distributor's repository on the release channel I expect them to not break the installation. Do you expect users now to check every package manually before they install updates? Making sure that packages work together is the core task of a linux distributor.
FYI: I'd love to have stayed on 6.8.x. However very recently I was forced to move to HWE because Ubuntu broke networking in 6.8.x (https://www.mail-archive.com/ubuntu- [email protected]/msg6239316.html, https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubuntu/comments/1qzd9fz/anybody_noticed_any_network_problems_with_kernel/) which caused network connections to randomly break and half of the packets getting lost for no reason. This bug despite being system- breaking wasn't fixed for quite some releases in-between (6.8.0.9x and 6.8.0-11x) either. And no offense I really don't get the "it's not that easy" argument. Literally all you need to do whenever a new hwe-kernel *or* virtual-box release is packaged for release on LTS is run: sudo apt install virtualbox linux-generic-hwe-<version> and *not* release either package when that command does not return 0.
