Public bug reported:

SUMMARY
-------
On Ubuntu 22.04 with HWE kernel 6.8.0-134-generic, the screen sometimes goes
black and the GNOME Wayland session ends at the GDM login screen. Kernel logs
show the discrete AMD GPU (Radeon RX 9070 XT / Navi 48) hitting amdgpu compute
ring timeouts, then a full MODE1 GPU reset with "VRAM is lost due to GPU
reset!".

This is not a normal logout. It was noticed while skipping tracks in Spotify
and when opening a second Cursor window. Most timeouts name "Process spotify"
in dmesg; Brave appeared once. Cursor was concurrent load, not named in resets.

I am currently booted on 6.8.0-124-generic (GRUB pinned) after triage. The
problem kernel is 6.8.0-134-generic.

REGRESSION
----------
- Bad: 6.8.0-134-generic (first full day after HWE upgrade 2026-07-19 ~22:55)
- Good: 6.8.0-124-generic (no matching ring-timeout / GPU-reset spam in a
control journal window the evening before the upgrade)

HARDWARE / SOFTWARE
-------------------
- Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, GNOME Shell 42.9, Wayland
- 03:00.0 VGA: AMD/ATI Navi 48 [Radeon RX 9070/9070 XT/9070 GRE] [1002:7550]
- 0e:00.0 VGA: AMD/ATI Granite Ridge [Radeon Graphics] [1002:13c0]
- Kernel cmdline includes: amdgpu.dc=1 amdgpu.runpm=0
  video=None-1:2560x1440@165e
- linux-firmware: 20220329.git681281e4-0ubuntu3.42
- Mesa: 23.2.1-1ubuntu3.1~22.04.4
- Spotify snap: latest/candidate rev 97

KERNEL EVIDENCE (PCI 0000:03:00.0)
---------------------------------
1) amdgpu: ring comp_*.*.* timeout
2) Process spotify … (thread spotify:cs0)
3) Soft ring reset → "device wedged, but recovered through reset"
4) Hard path: Ring reset failed → GPU reset begin → MODE1 / smu mode1 reset
5) VRAM is lost due to GPU reset!
6) Wayland session dies → black screen → GDM

Also: "MES FW version must be >= 0x82 to enable LR compute workaround" and
"SMU driver if version not matched" at boot / after reset.

This is not the older Type I pattern on this machine (dml21 / order:9 /
flip_done timed out). Those markers were count=0 on the primary incident boot.

Primary archived boot: 2026-07-20 14:34–15:12 on 6.8.0-134, MODE1 ~14:56 and
~14:58. Same day: repeated Spotify-blamed soft resets (~07:18, ~14:17) and
another MODE1 ~14:27.

REPRODUCIBILITY
---------------
Intermittent under normal desktop use on 6.8.0-134 when:
- Skipping songs in Spotify (snap), and/or
- Opening a second Cursor window / project picker

Please advise on known Navi 48 / MES issues on 6.8.0-134, firmware to test,
or staying on 124 until a fix.

Thank you.
