OK. Thank you so much for your time and patience. You are a true
champion.
I have uninstalled virtualbox and virtualbox-dkms. When removing the
former I still saw the error message, but then noted everything was
cleared up once I removed the latter. I then had some packages ready for
update, so I updated those through the graphic interface. That went
smoothly with no error messages. And a successful restart.
The system has been restored.
