Public bug reported:
Summary
Black screen after booting Ubuntu with Linux kernel 7.x on a system with
AMD Ryzen 5 5500U with Radeon Graphics and integrated AMD Lucienne
graphics (PCI ID 1002:164c, amdgpu).
The system works normally with Linux kernel 6.17.
Expected result
The graphical desktop should start normally after boot.
Actual result
After booting Linux kernel 7.x, the display becomes black and the
graphical desktop does not appear.
Safe Graphics mode works (nomodeset).
Regression
* Linux kernel 6.17: works normally
* Linux kernel 7.x: black screen after boot
* Safe Graphics mode: works
Hardware
* CPU/APU: AMD Ryzen 5 5500U with Radeon Graphics
* GPU: integrated AMD Lucienne graphics
* PCI ID: 1002:164c
* Kernel driver: amdgpu
Version information / chronology
I originally installed Ubuntu 26.04 LTS around 2026-06-20.
That installation did not boot to a usable graphical desktop and resulted in a
black screen.
I believe it was using a 7.0.0-28 kernel, but I am not completely sure about
the exact subversion.
I then rolled back to Ubuntu 24.04, where kernel 6.17 worked normally.
This bug report is being filed from the currently working Ubuntu 24.04
system with kernel 6.17 OEM, because the system was not usable with
kernel 7.x.
I also observed a possibly related suspend/resume display issue on this
hardware:
after closing the laptop lid, the system appears to suspend and later resume,
but the screen stays black while the machine itself seems active.
I am not sure whether this is the same root cause or a separate issue.
Additional information
The system was rolled back to Linux kernel 6.17 and the 7.x kernel was
removed because the machine was not usable with kernel 7.x.
Relevant hardware information, package versions, and journal logs from
available boots are attached.
If needed, I can try to reproduce again with a 7.x kernel and collect
additional logs.

-
- Later, I also tried an OEM kernel while attempting to solve a suspend/resume
issue.
- With that issue, closing the laptop lid suspends the system, and opening the
lid resumes it, but the display stays black even though the machine appears to
wake up normally (fans/lights/system activity continue).
-
- It is possible that the boot black screen on kernel 7.x and the
- suspend/resume black screen are related to the same AMDGPU/display
- issue.
