Public bug reported:
My HP laptop running Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS suddenly powered off because the
battery was completely drained. Since then, the normal boot process has
been broken and the issue keeps recurring after reboot.
The machine normally drops to the GRUB command line instead of booting
Ubuntu automatically.
After investigating the partitions from GRUB, I found that the disk
contains multiple Linux installations:
(hd0,gpt2) contains an old Debian 9 Stretch installation with an old
5.7.0-rc5-amd64 kernel.
(hd0,gpt5) contains my actual Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS installation.
Ubuntu's root partition UUID is 883f4c66-59a3-4733-994d-5285c0a583b3.
Ubuntu has a working 6.17.0-35-generic kernel.
The SSD/NVMe drive and its partitions are detected correctly. Ubuntu
itself is not corrupted because I can boot it successfully manually from
the GRUB command line.
Temporary workaround:
Every time the problem occurs, I can boot Ubuntu manually from the grub>
prompt using:
set root=(hd0,gpt5)
linux /boot/vmlinuz-6.17.0-35-generic
root=UUID=883f4c66-59a3-4733-994d-5285c0a583b3 ro
initrd /boot/initrd.img-6.17.0-35-generic
boot
Ubuntu then starts successfully and works normally.
Therefore, the problem appears to be with the persistent GRUB/UEFI boot
configuration rather than the Ubuntu root filesystem itself. The manual
GRUB commands work, but the fix is not persistent, so the same problem
returns after shutdown/reboot.
I need help identifying why GRUB is not automatically loading the
correct Ubuntu installation on (hd0,gpt5) and how to permanently repair
the GRUB/UEFI boot configuration.
