I've done some further investigation and it seems a
driver/kernel/bios/memory problem with kernels > 2.6.20 unrelated to the
distro you use. There's a thread in the nvidia linux forums where the
problem is discussed.

ps. I've tried all 3 methodes of installing the nvidia driver
(restricted driver manager, compile from source with nvidia installer,
using envy) neither of them worked and all gave the same problem.
