## Summary
On Linux Mint 22.3 (Ubuntu 24.04 noble base), the shutdown/reboot hang is a
persistent regression carrying over across the kernel 7.0 series (first widely
observed on 7.0.0-28, persisting on 7.0.0-29, and still present on
7.0.0-30-generic [7.0.0-30.30~24.04.1]).
After normal desktop usage involving media playback and web browsing,
initiating shutdown proceeds cleanly through systemd targets until
poweroff.target is reached. The monitors turn off / enter standby, but
the chassis fans keep spinning and the power LEDs remain on
indefinitely. The system becomes unresponsive and requires a forced
power-off or SysRq (REISUB) to reboot.
## Regression Continuity & Progression
- Kernel 6.17.0-42-generic: WORKS (clean power-off / reboot every time).
- Kernel 7.0.0-28-generic: FAILS (widespread shutdown/reboot hangs reported
across AMD hardware).
- Kernel 7.0.0-29-generic: FAILS (issue remains unresolved).
- Kernel 7.0.0-30-generic: FAILS (tested; hangs consistently after active
session).
## Steps to Reproduce
1. Boot into kernel 7.0.0-30-generic.
2. Run standard user workloads (e.g., Firefox browsing, YouTube video/audio
streaming) for a normal session.
3. Attempt to shutdown or reboot via desktop UI or terminal (`systemctl
poweroff`).
4. Result: Systemd completes teardown, monitors enter power saving mode, but
the machine hangs in a powered-on state.
## Key Observations
- Session Dependent: Performing an immediate shutdown or reboot right after a
clean boot works fine. The deadlock consistently manifests only after the
system has run graphical/multimedia workloads.
- Systemd Completion: Logs from the preceding failed boot (journalctl -b -1)
confirm that all userspace services, filesystems (/boot/efi, swap), and targets
down to systemd-poweroff.service and poweroff.target deactivate cleanly before
systemd-journald stops.
- Workaround: Rolling back to kernel 6.17.0-42-generic completely resolves the
issue on the exact same hardware.
## Technical Assessment / Root Cause Hypothesis
- Clean teardown by systemd-shutdown confirms the deadlock happens strictly at
the kernel/ACPI hardware power-down boundary (transition to S5 state).
- Because the issue is workload-dependent (triggered after video decode / web
rendering) and affects systems utilizing AMD graphics, this points to an amdgpu
driver regression in the 7.0.0 branch related to runtime power management (BACO
/ D3cold state transitions) or unreleased hardware rings (VCN/SDMA) on
power-off.
