Chris: I'm also not sure as to the when of this, because for the most part I am a "late adapter" or "not moving to wayland" as a "not ready for prime time" piece of software. So I am still largely running "LXQT Desktop" when I get to Lubuntu in my weekly scheduling of it. On my Sys76 laptop running Pop_OS! they have moved COSMIC to wayland, but there are functional issues with it that motivated me to move to GNOME to keep using X11.
So, it was only an idle moment in Lubuntu where I thought, "O, how is wayland running in stonking?" and logging out of LXQT that I saw there were the 6 options to choose from, but I personally didn't add any of them other than the default inclusion of Openbox . . . to then find that it is only either "Lubuntu wayland" or "LXQT Desktop" that actually work. As far as "release-upgrade" goes, don't think so, I usually just edit the repos to change the system . . . i.e, changing "resolute" to "stonking" . . . which used to be quite easy, as it still is in Debian . . . . I didn't run any "apt install wayland" command . . . . This is now on a relatively new machine, maybe installed as "questing" or thereabouts . . . . Overall it is running fine, no errors popping up in the console when running dist-upgrade on it.
