Public bug reported:
Title: Cheese preview freezes after startup with PipeWire camera source
Package: cheese 41.1-1build1
Ubuntu: Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy
Hardware: Integrated Camera, /dev/video0
Camera formats tested: MJPG 1280x720@30fps and 640x480@30fps
Steps to reproduce:
1. Start Cheese.
2. Select the integrated camera.
3. Leave the preview running, or start a recording.
Actual result:
The preview is correct briefly after startup, then repeats/freezes one captured
frame. Recording may stop early or produce an invalid duration.
Relevant log messages from the unmodified package:
- pipewiresrc: streaming stopped, reason error (-5)
- cluttergstvideosink: QoS dropped buffers
- timestamps jump from zero to several hours
- Cheese reports an internal data stream error
Expected result:
The preview should continue at the camera frame rate, and photo/video capture
should remain usable.
Patch:
The attached patch makes Cheese prefer the real /dev/video* node and create
v4l2src directly when that node is available. It enables do-timestamp on
v4l2src. If no V4L2 path is available, the original GstDevice source creation
remains unchanged.
Validation:
On this camera, the patched build created v4l2src and created no pipewiresrc. A
5-second run produced no streaming-stopped, internal-data-stream, QoS-drop, or
many-buffers-dropped messages.
Patch attachment:
cheese-v4l2-direct-source.patch
Regression note:
This should be tested with a normal V4L2 USB camera, a camera exposed only
through PipeWire, multiple cameras, photo capture, and video recording.
** Affects: cheese (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: New
